Digitl Media Cultures

Out of the 9 questions that were set in this module I chose 'How are public service broadcasters responding to the challenges of the contemporary media industry?' I had a lot planned for this question and struggled to fit it all but was it good enough? I will find out soon...

3 Main Questions

1st Question set by Ian Wareing from Digital Fiction Factory

The internet, social media and other open systems generated content (UGC) crowd sourcing and other forms of audience participation to prevail in digital media. But how do we translate these features into storytelling experiances without treading on the toes of the author?

Here are a few notes I wrote through out his presentation...

The 4 main company's involved BBC, Channel 4, Conker Media, Creative England.
- Multi layered storytelling
- It all begins with the writer
- Each part must work independently
- Engagement across platforms = deeper experience of character and story
- New project = New model
- The creative network

Example of Audience participation 'The Well' by Melvin Burgess
Writer -> audience -> participation
Consider Innovations In...
TV, Radio, Film - Britain in a day & million pound drop
Online- The exquisite forest & bear 71
Mobile/Tablet - Alice for iPad & 99 reasons why
Social Media - Take this lollipop & Inside
Live Events - Ide hide you & wretch32 Invasion

They are all connected by audience participation
The Question...

TV Studio part 2

After we did the paper airplanes exercise it was time to start planning for our interview, researching who the group would want.
For our 1st tutorial meeting our group had a few leads on a few people, one member of our group had chosen to get in contact with a tattoo artist, another had got in contact with a psychic and someone else had got in contact with people that.
After this meeting we decided to persue the idea of interviewing a psychic, as I am set design I decided to begin thinking of set idea's and floor plans here are some I drew...

Set design ideas & floor plans

These were shown to the group in our next tutorial meeting.

The day before our show the group went out and got all the materials for the show, here are some pictures of what the final set looked like...

After we finished filming the interview we still had the music piece to record, I was a bit excited about filming the music part because I enjoy music video's and creating them. I chose to go on the middle camera for this one because there was much more challenging shots for example there was tracking shot which meant moving a couple steps to one side aswell as moving back to the same position
I am currently waiting for a copy of the final piece because the finished piece is really good.

Qualitative research

For our Qualitative research we decided to interview another group. The method we chose to use was writing a letter, a letter that they would have to send to the university whilst pretending they were still in the process of applying for this course. Below is the question we wanted our interviewees to think about

Here are the answers we recieved...

After we recieved our answers we were able to create a chart to show the statistics for the questions.

Quantitative Research

Quantitative research techniques:
- Questionnaires
- Surveys online
- Voting Polls
- Census

Measures a large group of peoples opinions and views

The question we were asked to answer by using quantitative and qualitative research
'Whats the best way to market a degree course to potential students?'

For our quantitative research we used these questions:

From our answers we were able to see some statistics such as 'More people agree the location has a big impact on their chosen university' and 'More people disagree the achievements of the lectures has an impact on their chosen course'

Factual Short Piece

My group and I have 1st had the idea to use the Cavern Club for our short factual filming. We think this could of been a really intresting piece for us to film and could get a lot of interviews and intresting stories.
Another idea we could of used was the night life of liverpool, although we have had difficulty trying to get hold of the A&E service.
After choosing our idea's we finally decided to use a band that make there instruments out of trash, they are called 'urban strawberry lunch'. They run a Tai Chi class every wednesday, so we decided to use this for our factual short film as the band do a lot of stuff for Liverpool. We plan to interview some of the people that attend the class, aswell as the Dr that runs it and if possible someone from the urban strawberry lunch band...

Edward de Bono's Six Thinking Hats

The hat I most enjoyed was the red one, as it is much easier to explain your feelings and emotions than it is to do a lot of what the other hats do.

People Profile

For our people profile we had idea to interview a jeweller called Tony Wong, we wanted to get footage of him making the jewellery and talking about it as an voice over. In the end we ended up filming becca's mum, Julie. She works at Liverpool Housing, we had a great voice over of her talking about what her job includes and we had some good footage of her doing some work in the office, at meetings and going to visit some of the people she works with.

Museum Assignment

Architecture...
For our first meeting we just thought about idea's for a Architect, this was not a good idea. After we spoke to the lecturers we decided to come up with any word that may relate to a Architect, below is all the words we came up with...

After we came up with words that relate to Architect, we came up with 5 people that may see the department for Architecture, below is the 5 people we chose...

From the 5 people we decided to come up with idea's that each person may want to see or do in the museum. For example a child in the museum is more than likely to want to play, so we decided to put lego in there so the child could build a building with the lego.

From all of these profiles we came up with our 1st idea of a 3D room, it will have a moving walkway in the middle so that the people can have a birds eye view of some buildings and a sofa at the back so that people can sit back and listen to the history, and there will be a table at the front so that children or anyone can make a building with the lego.

We began to create this idea, but before we started actually making it Phoebe remembered a past experiance at disney world. From this we then came up with a better idea of a moving room. We made a prezi to explain in more detail.
Here is the prezi we plan to use in our presentation...

Western Films

Western Elements:
- Isolation of the individual
- Potentially brutality

Basic Plots:
- Classic Plot
- Transition Theme
- Vengeance Variation
- Professional Plot

The only western film I have enjoyed is True Grit. The storyline is...
Following the murder of her father by hired hand Tom Chaney, 14-year-old farm girl Mattie Ross sets out to capture the killer. To aid her, she hires the toughest U.S. marshal she can find, a man with "true grit," Reuben J. "Rooster" Cogburn. Mattie insists on accompanying Cogburn, whose drinking, sloth, and generally reprobate character do not augment her faith in him. Against his wishes, she joins him in his trek into the Indian Nations in search of Chaney. They are joined by Texas Ranger LaBoeuf, who wants Chaney for his own purposes. The unlikely trio find danger and surprises on the journey, and each has his or her "grit"

Google Maps

My groups idea is linked by statue's around world, the main story is how and why they are all going home. Our starting point was 'Another place' in Liverpool. The 1st story is...
Prince Erik and the rest of his kingdom set out to try and find the little mermaid, his one true love. However, there was one wicked old witch who wouldn't let a happily ever after happen. They searched the whole beach for the rock where his mermaid lay, but it was no good, she was nowhere to be found. The wicked old witch had been watching them for hours as they searched, she saw the Prince and his followers getting closer to where the mermaid was, she had gave them enough time. She cast them all to stone so there would never be a happily ever after for Prince Erik and the little mermaid.

This leads the story to the statue of the little mermaid statue in Denmark, her story is...
The princess mermaid of the sea set out on a journey to become human to gain the love of a human man. Foolishly, the little mermaid enters into an agreement with an evil sea witch in order to become human herself, although the price was her precious voice. She had 3 days to make Prince Erik fall in love with her, an ultimately kiss her, otherwise she would be doomed. The little mermaid will only get a soul if she finds true love's kiss and if the prince loves her and ultimately marries her, then a part of his soul will flow into hers. Otherwise, at dawn on the first day after he marries another woman the mermiad would die broken hearted and disintegrate into sea foam, The evil witch explains to her that humans have a much shorter life than mermaids do- being 300 years, although when mermaids die they turn to seafoam and cease to exist, while humans have an eternal soul that lives on into Heaven. After the 3 days, the prince still hasn't vowed his love to the little mermaid, meaning she would return into her mer-self and return back to her family under the sea. The little mermaid refuses to leave her true love and consequently she gets turned into iron by the sea witch for not obeying the rules.

This leads the story to the statue of the Horton's Folly Penguins in Scotland, their story is...
They were on their way to find the princesses father to tell him that his daughter had been turned to stone, as they were walking to the town to tell the king they were confronted by the sea witch, each penguin tried to tell the witch a different reason why they should not be turned into stone. The witch decided none of there reasons were good enough and turned them all into stone.

Which then leads the story to the statue called 'The Awakening - Buried Giant' in Washington, His story is...
The mermaids father heard about his daughters story. He different from the rest, he was allowed on land when he wanted to, whilst he was on land, he heard about the story so he made his way to the sea to kill the sea witch. As he reached the beach trying to look for his daughter at the sea witch's palace. The sea witch was so powerfull that the king did not stand a chance against her. she made the sand below his feet sinking sand. He could not get out in time and was turned into stone whilst he sank.

This leads the story to the statue called 'corporate head' it is in front of the ernst & young building in downtown los angeles, he does not have a story...
He is a reporter, he reported on every story of each of the statue's until the witch go so tired and annoyed that, as he was on his way to work she put his head in the wall so he could not see anything to report on and turned him to stone.

Location Filming

Choosing which location for the 1st piece of semester 2. First we chose to do the river mersy, but was not able to capture as much footage as we would of liked to, which meant the rough cut was not as good as our final piece turned out to be. Our final chosen location was the Cathedral building, we have decided to film inside and out the building to show everything there is to know about the building. I had to ring the building to get permission for the filming, which was a long process as I had to e-mail them then try ring them etc. In the end we were able to film inside the main part of the building and we were saved tickets to film in the tower. The final piece is roughly 1min 25seconds, it worked well but it was not the most interesting piece the group has done.
